Goal: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
Peaceful societies and freedom from violence are both a goal and a means to sustainable development. Inclusive, accountable and equitable institutions are the basis for good governance free from conflict, corruption and violence. All people are equal before the law and should have equal access to justice and opportunities to exercise influence and accountability over decision-making.
No lasting progress can be achieved in a context of conflict and violence. Violence not only causes human suffering, it also erodes the foundations of society’s economic, environmental and social development. Countries affected by war and protracted conflict are those that have the greatest difficulty in lifting their populations out of poverty. Strengthening the rule of law and promoting human rights is the key to peaceful, inclusive and sustainable societies.
Through its work and contribution to strengthening local democracy, ICLD contributes directly to the following sub-goals:
16.6. Develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels
16.7 Ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels
To help ensure that all our funded project contribute to SDG 16, we have also made available an online course dedicated to Human Rights Budgeting and Anti-corruption in Local governance.
