Goal: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
More than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, and the proportion is expected to rise to 70% by 2050. Growing cities can create new opportunities for economic growth, but they can also contribute to widening social gaps and putting pressure on ecosystems. Sustainable urban development involves sustainable construction and planning of housing, infrastructure, public spaces, transport, recycling and safer chemicals management, which in turn requires new technologies and multi-sectoral cooperation.
Through its efforts and contribution to strengthening local democracy, ICLD contributes directly to the following sub-goals:
11.3 By 2030, enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory, integrated and sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries
11.6 By 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management
