Goal: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
Equality between women and men is a prerequisite for sustainable and peaceful development. Equality is about the fair distribution of power, influence and resources. Research also shows that in many cases gender equality acts as a catalyst and accelerator for the 2030 Agenda, so addressing gender equality will achieve other results more quickly.
ICLD’s active commitment to the achievement of Goal 5 permeates all activities. Gender mainstreaming training is provided to municipal representatives as part of all projects and an overarching objective for all activities during the strategy period is to contribute to achieving measurable increases in the number of women in decision-making bodies. Political, economic and social equality between women and men contributes to all dimensions of sustainable development. Through its efforts and contribution to strengthened local democracy, ICLD contributes directly to the following sub-goals:
5.1 End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere
5.5 Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life
