It is important to regularly monitor and evaluate progress towards achieving the SDGs at the local level to ensure that the action plan is effective and to identify any challenges or areas for improvement. This will involve collecting and analyzing data, conducting assessments, and engaging with local stakeholders – topics we have already discussed.

This illustrates how SDG localisation, just like any policymaking, is a cyclical process of continuously analysing, implementing and evaluating.
The poster below is an inspiring example by ICLEI Africa of the need for reflection in the localisation process.

There are different mechanisms to monitor and evaluate your progress to localise the SDGs. The next section will give one prominent mechanism. Keep in mind the difference between progress on translating policy from a national or global framework to local policy, and progress on implementing the goals on a local level. Both are part of SDG localisation.
Monitoring in an ICLD project
Continuously reviewing and your progress and revising thereafter is also part of your ICLD project. The action plan in the POPP workbook is revised on a yearly basis. The changes reflect both progress on activities and new understandings of the problem, the context and possible solutions.
