One way to accelerate implementation of the SDGs is to track progress. The official reporting mechanism for this happens on three levels: Voluntary National Reviews, Voluntary Sub-national Reviews and Voluntary Local Reviews. This is a growing movement of actors aiming to identify areas where positive impact can be strengthened and negative impact reduced, so that projects and activities can make the greatest possible contribution to Agenda 2030. On a local level, VLRs have the potential to improve citizen participation and increase local governments transparency, equity and accountability. While some cases of VLRs are bureaucratic or technical exercises, using a participatory approach accounts for the need to bring different actors of society together to assess the achievement of the SDGs and explore a common vision.
