It’s time to connect the issues you are working on with the relevant SDGs. You probably know what SDG’s directly relate to your research topic, but take a closer look at the targets and specify what targets and what indicators are especially relevant. If you twist and turn your question, and if you read up on targets in not-so-obvious goals, you may also find less straight-forward connections that can uplift your project. This session requires a few hours – divide it up.
Next, go through the goals once more and consider whether the change affected by answering your question can have a negative impact on a certain goal. Initiatives for economic empowerment may negatively affect climate goals, for instance. The SDG Impact assessment tool is a great way to systematically identify what goals and targets a project impacts both positively and negatively. It requires 3-4 hours and is better suited for practitioner questions than research, but you should be familiar with the tool’s existence.
Thirdly, connecting the most relevant SDGs/targets to human rights instruments may give you an additional entry point for analysis (and to give arguments weight). This tool lists all major human rights instruments under the SDG they correspond to. Click on the goals and targets you’ve identified as most important to your CBPR project for this course, and explore the corresponding rights.
