They encourage a comprehensive approach to addressing gender inequality, including economic empowerment, education, healthcare, and political participation. Local governments can benefit from these frameworks as they provide a roadmap for implementing gender-sensitive policies and access to funding and technical assistance.

The SDGs were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 and include a specific goal on gender equality (Goal 5). The SDGs call for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls, the promotion of women’s economic empowerment, and the full participation of women in all spheres of life. The WEPs are a set of principles for business that offer guidance on how to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace, marketplace, and community.
