Welcome to this online course on Gender Equality in Local Governance!
The course will introduce you to the concepts of Gender Equality and Gender Mainstreaming, what they are and how they are vital for a prosperous and just local government. It will also support you to gender mainstream your ICLD project. This course consists of four modules, each taking between 1-2 hours to complete.
You can take the course on your own or together with your project group/team. If you are part of an ICLD network or training programme, certain modules of this course will be facilitated in an ICLD workshop.

After participating in this course, you will be able to:
- Define key components of gender equality and gender mainstreaming.
- Explain how gender norms are created.
- Advocate for gender equality within your local government.
- Apply gender mainstreaming tools within your ICLD project.

- Module 1: Introduction to Gender EqualityThe aim of this module is to introduce you the topic of gender equality, vital definitions and international frameworks that promote and defend gender equality.6
- Module 2: Equality for Women = Prosperity for allHow can equality for women lead to a more prosperous society? In this module you will join ICLD Research Director Ana Maria Vargas and International Economist Antonio Lopez-Claros in four recorded sessions as they discuss the world of inequality and how whole societies change when promoting gender equality and women's empowerment.5
- Module 3: Gender Mainstreaming - A Way to Achieve Gender EqualityThis module focuses on how you can use gender mainstreaming as a strategy to improve gender equality at the local level.4
- Module 4: Gender Responsive CommunicationIn this module we look at how communication can be used both to challenge and maintain gender inequality and social norms.1
